Zoom Phone supports our community in several ways. One of which is ensuring that calling emergency services is as simple as possible. So, what happens if you are to call emergency services using Zoom Phone?
Both UPD and Austin 9-1-1 services will receive room location information when dialing 911 from any campus phone. Specifically, the data they will receive includes:
- Physical address (ex., 3001 S. Congress Ave)
- Building name (ex., JBWN)
- Room number
If an emergency call is made on the wireless network (such as calling from a laptop or PC), it will have the location of the wireless access point that they are connected to, which will have the closest room number assigned to it.
- Note: Make sure that location services are turned on for your computer, so Zoom Phone can accurately report where you are in an emergency call.
When dialing 9-1-1, calls will go directly to Austin emergency services. UPD will have the option of listening on the line and assisting first responders when they arrive on campus if needed.
Emergency Services for Working Remotely
If you are working remotely, you will be prompted to set up an emergency address in your Zoom app. When you enter your emergency address, please put it in your location for emergency location services. See Zoom's support article for instructions on managing your emergency address.
If you are prompted to add an emergency address while working on campus, contact OIT so a Zoom administrator can add the campus location address.
Emergency Services In the Event of An Outage
We will always communicate if there is potential for planned network downtime. However, we know that network downtime is a possibility. Desk phones will still work for at least 20 minutes in the event of a power outage. Laptops with batteries will still be connected to wi-fi access points and have the same 20-minute minimum run time. You could still use your device to call for 9-1-1 emergency services as needed.
