New Quizzes is a new quizzing tool in Canvas that faculty may enable and use in their courses. Check out the Introduction to New Quizzes in Canvas to learn about the differences between Classic and New Quizzes.
This article covers the following topics:
Before you can start using New Quizzes, you must enable it in your class. Since this feature is still optional, we have not enabled it for every Canvas course; instead, we are leaving it as a faculty choice.
- Click Settings at the bottom of the course navigation menu.
- Click the Feature Options tab.

- Next to the New Quizzes feature (1), click the State icon (a red X indicates the Disabled state), then select Enabled (2). The State icon will change to a green check.
- Click Quizzes in the course navigation menu.
Click the Options icon (three vertical dots) to the right of the quiz title you want to convert and select Migrate.
- This will create a copy of the quiz in the New Quizzes format, indicated by a filled-in rocket icon. (A rocket outline icon indicates the Classic Quizzes format.)
- To edit the questions in New Quizzes, follow the steps on Building a New Quiz [link to anchor below]. Note: Every time you need to edit questions or Settings, you will need to return to Build, which is linked by a button at the bottom of the quiz page.
- To save and publish your quiz, click on the Return button in the upper right corner and then save and/or save and publish on the main Quiz page.

For a quick overview, view this video guide to New Quizzes.
- From the Quizzes page on your course site, click +Quiz in the top-right corner. This will open a "Choose a Quiz Engine" pop-up box. From here, you can choose between the two quiz engines.
- "New Quizzes" is the new quizzing tool that Canvas is transitioning to. Select this option to test out the New Quizzes' interface and functions.
- "Classic Quizzes", he original quizzing tool, is being phased out. However, you can still create and use Classic Quizzes by selecting this option. If you are not ready to move to New Quizzes, choose this option.
- To save your quiz engine selection, check "Remember my choice for this course." You can always reset your selection if you change your mind.
- Click "Submit" to proceed with quiz creation.
- The Assignments creation page will open, where you can enter a title, description, and due and availability dates.
- To create questions and configure settings, click the Build button at the bottom of the page to enter the New Quizzes tool.
- The Canvas Build screen will open. Start by adding any instructions. Click on the edit button (pencil icon) or click on Add instructions to open the Canvas editor.
- Add any instructions and click on Done to save.
- To start adding questions, click on the + sign at the bottom of the instructions window.
- Click on any of the content types to start adding content to your quiz.
Canvas offers guides to all the question types in the "How do I create a quiz using New Quizzes" article.
To set a time limit, shuffle the order of questions, allow multiple attempts, and show feedback or correct answers, click on the Settings tab in the Build window.
New Settings include
- Shuffle questions randomizes the order in which questions are presented to students.
- Allow On-Screen Calculator (Basic or Scientific)
- If you allow multiple attempts, you can also enable
- Waiting period between attempts. Set a time before students can reattempt the quiz.
- Build on last attempt. This option allows students to reattempt questions they have incorrectly answered. On a reattempt, students do not see the questions they have already responded to correctly; they only see the questions they answered incorrectly.

Canvas support provides a detailed explanation of all settings in "How do I manage settings for a quiz in New Quizzes?"
To add an extra attempt or allow a specific student extra time, click on the Moderate button in the Build menu.
New features include the ability to assign additional time to a specific student for all quizzes in a class.
The Moderation page displays a list of students in the course [1], their quiz attempts [2], the score for each attempt [3], the time for each attempt [4], attempt logs [5], and total quiz accommodations [6].
You can choose to display scores as a percentage or raw score by clicking the Configure icon [7].
To moderate a quiz for an individual student, click the Moderate button [8]. Moderation options include managing timer settings and reopening a student's most recent attempt.
To manage student course-wide quiz accommodations, click the student name link [9].
To open SpeedGrader, click the SpeedGrader button [10].
After students have taken a quiz, view analytics by clicking on the Reports button in the Build menu.
Both the Quiz and Item Analysis reports are available. View descriptions of available reports in How do I view reports for a New Quiz?
After adding your quiz questions, click on Return at the top right of the page.
Instructors can print copies of quizzes in New Quizzes. You can either print a quiz key with answers shown or print a blank quiz with no answers. Quizzes can be printed on paper or saved to your computer as a PDF file.
- To print a quiz, select the quiz you want to open.
- To open the Build page, click the Options icon and then click the Build link.
- Within the Build window, click the Options icon and select the desired output, either Print Key (with answers) or Print Blank Quiz.
