Using Gmail

At St. Edward's, we use Gmail and Google Calendar for our university email and calendaring.

Gmail allows you to send, receive or download email attachments up to 25 MB.

Getting Started

You can access your inbox in three ways:

No matter which way you choose, you'll enter your St. Edward's username and password to log in.

Email Address

Your St. Edward's email address follows this format: username@stedwards.edu. You can see your address when you click your picture or initial in the top right corner of your inbox.

Toggling Accounts

If you use Gmail for your personal email account, you can toggle between your inboxes easily through the account switcher in the top right corner of your inbox. You'll need to add the account by clicking your picture or initial, selecting "Add Account" and logging in to your other inbox.

Using Gmail on Your Phone

The best way to check your email on your mobile device is by downloading the Gmail app from the iOS App Store or the Google Play Store.

iPhone users can add Gmail to their device's native mail app, but this has limited support from Google and OIT. We officially support the Gmail app on iOS and Android, and web access on Windows and macOS computers.

Managing Your Inbox

You have several options to organize your email and customize your inbox.

Labels and Filters

Labels in Gmail work similarly to folders when categorizing and storing email, but you can apply more than one label to any message for simpler sorting. Filters, meanwhile, provide even greater flexibility. They can be configured to direct incoming mail automatically to a label or to archive, delete or star a message.

Inbox View

You also have different options for how to look at your email. Besides the traditional view, Gmail has an additional style option, which moves incoming messages into separate tabs based on type (updates, social, promotions, etc.). Emails can also be grouped into conversations, which display email threads together, instead of as separate messages.

Spam

Gmail automatically identifies spam and other suspicious emails and sends them to Spam. You can manage your inbox by marking or unmarking emails as spam. You can also report phishing emails from within your inbox.

Note: If you prefer to view your inbox in a separate email client, we also have instructions for syncing Gmail with Outlook and Mac Mail.
