Faculty can copy a Canvas course to multiple sections or copy a course from one semester to the next.
Anyone with the role of Teacher, TA or Non-Grading TA can import content into a course as long as they have one of those roles in both the original course and the destination course.
This article covers the following topics:
If you use external tools, such as Hypothesis, Honorlock, Panopto, Turnitin, or Zoom those will need to be recreated or have permissions changed in the new course.
- Panopto: How to Copy, Share and/or Move Panopto Videos Between Canvas Courses
- Hypothesis: If your Assignment or Module was created using a publicly accessible URL or a PDF stored in Google Drive then the reading should work properly when copied into another Canvas section or course. If your Assignment or Module was created using a PDF from an uploaded file, while Canvas will copy the reading for you, they do not change which file the reading looks at. Therefore, the new reading will continue to look for the old version of the file that resides in the old course. Hypothesis currently shows students and instructors an error message when this happens. To fix your Hypothesis assignments, follow the instructions at Canvas Course Import and Hypothesis.
- Honorlock: You can copy your Honorlock assignments, but you will also need to update the Honorlock Settings in the new course. To do so, select Honorlock from the course menu. Once selected, you will be presented with the option to carry over all Honorlock settings for all applicable exams you have copied. To proceed with copying your Honorlock settings, click on Copy Settings. Click the OK button once presented with the confirmation prompt to proceed with the copying of your Honorlock settings.Once the process has been completed, you will be redirected to Honorlock, where you will find your list of Honorlock-enabled exams.
- Turnitin: Turnitin assignments should be set up in the new class. If you copy a Turnitin assignment, it may retain the availability dates in the Turnitin assignment. This is only visible in the Turnitin-specific settings. We recommend that any Turnitin assignments be changed to Online Submission assignments, saved, and then edited to change them to External Tools-->Turnitin assignments.
- Zoom: If you used the Zoom integration with Canvas in a prior semester, it automatically added calendar entries for all of your course Zoom meetings. Those calendar entries will copy over to your new class. When you import course materials into a new class, we recommend that you select specific content and do not check Calendar entries so that they do not copy to your new class. You will need to set up new Zoom meetings for the current semester.
If you have Announcements in the course you are copying from, you don't want those to copy to the new course as they will copy as published, and you will have to delete all of the announcements or reschedule them manually. Instead, import Selected Content (see below)and select everything except Announcements.
- Log in to Canvas.
- Go to the new course to which you want to copy materials.
- Go to Settings or the Home page in that course.
- In the right menu, click Import Content into this Course.
- Click the Content Type dropdown menu and select Copy a Canvas Course.
- Enter the Course ID(for example, ENGW-1301-06)in the Search for a Course box. If you start typing, matching suggestions will appear.
- Note: You can only import content from courses for which you have permission as a Teacher, TA or Non-Grading TA.
- In the Course Content section, select either All Content or Select Specific Content. If you choose Select Specific Content, you'll be prompted to select content after you click Import Content. You'll need to check the boxes for each content area or specific content items you wish to be copied. See detailed instructions below.
- Adjusting the Due Dates and Events is optional. If your new course is going to be structured similarly to the original course, you may save time by choosing this option. It may also be quicker to adjust the dates after copying the course. More information about this can be found in the Canvas Community article on adjusting due dates. If you would like to remove all of the due dates from the course copy, select Adjust events and due dates, and then Canvas also has a feature, bulk update assignment dates, that allows you to adjust all due dates on one page, which may be the easiest option.
- To start the import, click "Import Content." A progress bar will display the percentage of the class copy that's complete. Most courses will take only a couple of minutes to copy. If you chose "Select Specific Content," click the button to select content.

Canvas will present you with a list of all the content in your course. You must check the box next to all of the content you want to be copied. You can do this for individual items or for entire categories of content (Pages, Modules, Files, etc.). Leave unchecked items such as Calendar entries and Announcements. Click on
Select Content when you are ready to start the copy.

The instructor of record for a course can add other instructors to a course, as a Non-Grading TA, in Canvas by following the instructions for Adding a TA or Instructor to a Canvas Course. Anyone with the Non-Grading TA role can import content from that course into a new course. If the original instructor is not available to share the course content, please follow the instructions below.
When sharing Canvas course content with an Instructor, a written request must be submitted to support@stedwards.edu. When submitting your written request, please make sure to provide:
- The SEU email address for the person to be added or who needs content copied from a prior course.
- The specific course, section, and semester (example: ABCD-1000-02 Spring 2019) to which you would like us to add the new instructor or from which to copy course materials.
- This request must be submitted by the Instructor of Record for the original course, a Department Chair, an Associate Dean, or a Dean. If submitted by the new instructor, they must also forward permission from the appropriate school official.
You can copy one assignment, page, quiz, or discussion to another course or to another instructor by using the Canvas Direct Share method. This method allows you to choose one item at a time and either copy it to another of your own courses or send it to another instructor. See the instructions at Sharing Content in Canvas.
