Panopto recordings can be shared and copied to multiple courses. Canvas does not copy Panopto recordings with the correct permissions when it copies other Canvas class content. You must manage copying and access permissions for Panopto videos in the Panopto Recordings section of the course.
This article covers:
How to Share Panopto Videos Between Canvas Courses
To copy or move a Panopto video to another Canvas course, you must enable the “Panopto Recordings” tool in the new Canvas course where the videos will be moved.
- Go to your new course in Canvas, and click “Settings.”

- Click the navigation tab in the settings window. Scroll down the list of hidden navigation items and enable “Panopto Recordings” by clicking the three dots next to the name on the right. Make sure to hit the save button at the bottom of the page.

Copy/Move Panopto video(s) from one Canvas course to Another
This solution is best if you only have a few videos needing to be copied and moved to a new course.
- Go to the Canvas course that contains the Panopto video(s) that need to be moved and select “Panopto Recordings” in the left navigation of the course.

- Hover over the video, then click the “Settings” button under the video's title.

- When the “Settings” window appears, click “Manage” on the left navigation of the window. Go to “Copy Session” and rename the video to delete the word “copy” from the title.
- Next, select “Copy” under the “Copy Session” section to make a copy of the video. This generates a copy of the video and switches the settings window to the copied video. Continue to keep the window open.

- Navigate to the “Overview” section in the Settings window.

- In the “Session Information,” click “Edit” to change the “Folder” location and browse for the new course where you will move the video.
- Search and select the folder for the new course.

- Once you've selected the new folder location, click “Save.”

- You can now close the Settings window. The video will now be relocated to the Panopto Recordings section of the new Canvas Course.
- Ensure the video is moved by going to the Panopto Recordings of the new Canvas course.
Sharing/Embedding a Video in a Canvas Page, Module or Discussion Board
Another way to share a video to a new course is to share a link or embed the video anywhere in the course where you can access the text editors like Pages, Announcements or Discussions. This option works best if you plan to include links to videos within your course such as in a course module or would like to incorporate videos within Content Pages. Content Pages allow instructors to incorporate text content with links and embedded media, similar to a website or wiki.
- In the Panopto Recording section of your course, click the “Share” button for the video.

- You will need to change the video's permissions in the Panopto Recordings section of the originating Canvas course to “Anyone at your org who has the link.” This will allow you to share your videos between your courses and prevent the video from being searchable in the public-facing Panopto video library.

- There are two options to share the video:
- You can copy the video's link and paste it into a course module, assignment, Canvas page or anywhere you are sharing links to course content.
- You can click embed, copy the embed code and paste it into the Canvas Content Page using the Source code tool in the Text Editor. This will allow viewers to see the video within the content of a page.
Bulk Copy/Move Panopto Videos from One Canvas Course to Another
- Go to your new course, click settings and enable Panopto Recordings. Once enabled, go to the Panopto Recordings area and click the “Open in Panopto” icon as seen below.

- A new browser tab will open and you will be taken to the Panopto website. Next, you’ll locate the folder for the previous semester’s course in the list on the left side of the menu. Once you locate the course folder in the list, click it and the recordings appear in the section to the right.

- You may now move or copy the recordings. If you would like to copy/move them all into the new semester’s Panopto folder, check the “select all” button.

- You’ll then click the “Copy” button.

- You’ll now click the drop-down menu and select the destination for the copied recordings, which would be the new semester’s course folder.

- Once selected, you’ll click the “Copy” button and the recordings will be copied into the current semester’s course.

Sharing Panopto Videos Using a Master Canvas Course
Another option for sharing a large collection of videos is to set up a master Canvas course to be used to develop the content of a course that can be copied over to a new Canvas course each semester. Videos will be stored in the Panopto Recordings section of the master course and can be shared in the “Course Modules” as links:

You can embed the video into content “Pages.” Content “Pages” allow instructors to incorporate text content with links and embedded media, similar to a website or wiki.

You will need to change the permissions of the “Panopto Recordings” folder in the master Canvas course to “Anyone at your org who has the link.” This will allow the videos to be viewable to students in a new course.
