Creating Panopto Recordings in a Classroom

Most classrooms at St. Edward's are equipped with videoconferencing technology, allowing you to conveniently record lectures and presentations using the in-room camera and microphone.

This article covers the following topics:

Enable Panopto in Canvas

To grant your students access to the recording, enable Panopto in your Canvas course first. This process takes less than a minute.

Turning On The Classroom Camera

To turn on the video camera and control it, press "Room Camera" at the bottom of the touchscreen panel.

Setting up Recording

To set up your recording:

  1. Click the "Panopto Recorder" icon in the left section of the computer desktop menu.
  2. To sign in to Panopto, ensure the server connection shows "stedwards.hosted.panopto.com."
  3. Click the sign-in button to be directed to a browser login screen.
  4. In the sign-in provider dropdown, choose "SEU Canvas," click "Sign In," and enter your St. Edward's credentials. Ensure you enable Panopto in your Canvas course before completing this step
    • Note: This is a one-time step per course per semester.
  5. If prompted, click the green "Authorize" button. If a pop-up asks to "Open Panopto Recorder," choose it.
  6. After opening the Panopto Recorder application, you may close the interim browser window.
  7. Ensure you're recording to the desired folder. To change folders, click the drop-down to the right of the folder text box and select from your available folders.
  8. Ensure you're recording with the appropriate camera and microphone, typically listed as the HDMI Video camera and the Samson GoMic microphone. This is the default setting and you should see both the video image and the audiometer moving when you talk. If those aren't the selected devices, use the dropdown arrows on their right to change them. If the camera is not on, follow the steps near the top of this document to activate it.
  9. If presenting a PowerPoint, select "Capture PowerPoint" under "Secondary Sources." Load up your PowerPoint beforehand.
  10. Click the red "Record" button when ready.
  11. Put the PowerPoint presentation in "Slideshow presentation" mode. Deliver the presentation as you normally would.

Ending The Recording

  1. When the recording is complete, exit the presentation mode in PowerPoint (ESC key). Next, go to the Panopto recorder, click the "Stop" button, and then the blue upload button when it appears.
  2. You will see the upload meter as the recording is uploaded to the server.
  3. Sign out of the Panopto recorder (top right) when finished.

What To Do If The Recording Did Not Save to Your Canvas Course

If you create a recording without enabling Panopto in your Canvas course, don't worry, you can move recordings between folders:

  1. Go to the Panopto server at https://stedwards.hosted.panopto.com and log in using the SEU Canvas provider and your St Edwards credentials.
  2. Locate the recording you want to move, then click "Settings" (located below the Panopto recording's title).
  3. Click "Edit" next to the folder name, and a dropdown menu will appear. You'll be able to select the destination course folder, then click "Save" and the recording will be moved to the destination course folder, becoming visible to the students in the destination course.
