Accessing Research Technology

St. Edward's provides access to software to support the research process. These tools will assist you in collecting, analyzing and organizing your data.

OIT supports research software through consultation and online resources like LinkedIn Learning. Faculty and staff with a university-owned computer can request installation of available applications through OIT support.

Atlas.ti Qualitative Data Analysis Users must purchase a license for ATLAS.ti, which offers a free trial, as well as student pricing. 
Note: If you are doing IRB-approved research, ensure that any use AI features is approved by the IRB.
 
Google Forms Survey tool All students, faculty and staff can access through Google Workspace for Education apps.
Qualtrics Survey tool All students, faculty and staff can log in to Qualtrics with their St. Edward's credentials.
NVivo Qualitative data analysis The university maintains a pool of NVIVO licenses assigned to researchers. NVivo can be installed on faculty computers by requesting access from OIT Support.  Please note that NVivo is complex software with a significant learning curve. If your project is smaller in scope or you are new to qualitative data analysis, you may want to consider simpler tools for qualitative analysis, such as ATLAS.ti, which offers a free trial, as well as student pricing.
 
SPSS Statistical software SPSS is pre-installed on all lab and classroom computers and is available to all St. Edward's faculty and students. Additionally, you can download the free student SPSS license.
R Statistical software R is available for free download directly from the R Project site.
SAS Advanced statistical software Users must purchase a license for SAS.
Tableau Business Intelligence (BI) Tool for creating visually appealing reports Tableau offers a free educational license for instructors and students. Maintenance and support for Tableau Server are managed by the Office of Institutional Effectiveness.
Excel Basic research and analysis software for storing, organizing and manipulating data Microsoft Office comes pre-installed on all lab and classroom computers, as well as all university-owned faculty and staff computers. Additionally, students can download a free Microsoft Office 365 license.
Minitab Statistical package Minitab is available on all Windows lab and classroom computers. Additionally, students and faculty can access the software online.
Maple Math and engineering software Maple is installed on all Windows lab and classroom computers and can be installed on university-owned faculty computers. Other users must purchase a separate license for access.

Citation Managers and Discovery Tools

Munday Library The Munday Library offers research support for searching library content, saving results into collections, and generating citations Research support is provided by the Munday Library via email, phone, online FAQs and research guides.
Google Scholar Search engine for scholarly literature Google Scholar is free to the public. To connect full-text articles to Google Scholar, users should access it from the Library's website.
Zotero Reference manager Zotero is a free, easy-to-use tool to help you collect, organize, annotate, cite, and share research.
Mendeley Reference manager Mendeley is free to download.
EndNote Reference manager Users must purchase an EndNote license.
Citation Machine Citation generator Citation Machine is free to download.  
Elicit AI Research Assistant

Elicit is an AI Research Assistant. You can ask a research question, and it will provide you a list of articles, and an AI-generated summary of the top papers. Users can opt for a free license or purchase a paid license. Use Google to authenticate. Elicit searches more than 125 million academic papers from the Semantic Scholar corpus across all academic disciplines. 

 
Research Rabbit AI Research Tool (Like Spotify for Papers) Research Rabbit will always be free. Users must set up an individual account. Research Rabbit searches the Semantic Scholar corpus. Upload a paper you like, and it will find similar papers. Visualize relationships between papers.
