Body

Teaching isn't reliant on technology, but the right tools can enhance the experience and transform the learning environment. Here you can find software recommendations and standard campus technology.

Check Available Campus Technology for software installed on university-owned computers and classrooms. Access online training via LinkedIn Learning or by requesting a consultation through support@stedwards.edu.

This article covers:

Available Classroom Technology

All St. Edward's classroom spaces are equipped with a standard set of technology including a computer, projector, video camera, microphone and document camera based on the usage of each room. We have compiled a list of classroom technology and campus-licensed software applications available for installation on university-owned computers.

Learning Management System (LMS)

St. Edward's uses Canvas as the supported learning management system. It automatically loads all courses, instructors and students as they are entered in Banner. Utilize Canvas to post syllabi, assignments, readings, slides, quizzes, online discussions, and track grades.

Documentation/Training: Access comprehensive Canvas Guides for assistance. Faculty members can receive individualized training through Instructional Technology consultations.

Availability: SEU Accounts grant all students, staff, and faculty access to Canvas. All users must have an active St. Edward's University account.

Attendance

Canvas offers Roll Call Attendance and Qwickly Attendance applications for tracking class attendance. See their overviews to choose the right one for your class.

Documentation/Training: Get started with Qwickly Attendance using the setup and usage guide. For Roll Call Attendance, refer to the Canvas guide for setup and usage instructions.

Quizzing

Faculty can create auto-graded quizzes in Canvas, using either "Classic" Quizzes or New Quizzes. Classic quizzes are enabled in every class by default. New Quizzes, which includes new question types, a new Build interface, and additional options for accommodations and multiple attempts must be enabled in your class via Settings and Feature Options.
Documentation/Training: Best Practices for Creating Quizzes in Canvas covers options and Quizzes offers all of the Canvas guides on creating quizzes. An introduction to New Quizzes is also available.

Turnitin

Turnitin, the university-supported plagiarism checker, provides Originality Reports for plagiarism checking and Feedback Studio for grading online assignments. Turnitin is integrated with Canvas Assignments and should be accessed through Canvas. This integration is already set up system-wide in Canvas, so you don't need to integrate it separately into your courses.

Generative AI Tools

Many, if not most, of the tools you'll use during the average day on the hilltop have integrated AI features in the last few years. IET staff maintain a non-exhaustive list of AI-enabled products in use on campus. For more information, see "Getting Started with AI." Some tools (like the Zoom Meeting AI Companion) have articles to help you use them. Search "AI" to find all of our articles about AI at St. Edward's.

Google Gemini

Google Gemini is a generative AI tool built into Google Workspace, which provides your St. Edward's email, calendar, and Drive storage. Chat with Gemini is a standalone, web-based tool that lets you prompt Gemini with questions, requests, and more.

Documentation/Training: Refer to 'Using Google Gemini' for a step-by-step guide to get started.

Availability: Gemini is available to all members of the SEU community through their Google account.

Google NotebookLM

NotebookLM is an AI-driven tool from Google Labs that helps users understand complex information by allowing them to upload various source materials (documents, web pages, audio) into a notebook and use AI to synthesize and analyze it. NotebookLM offers options to create study guides, briefings, FAQs, and audio overviews. Users can interact directly with the AI via a chat interface, posing questions and receiving answers grounded in the uploaded material, complete with inline citations to notebook content.

Documentation/Training: Refer to Using Google NotebookLM to get started.

Availability: Google NotebookLM is available to everyone with a St. Edward's University account at https://notebooklm.google.com/.

Rumi

Rumi is an instructional tool that allows faculty to set AI policies for writing assignments in Canvas. Based on the policy, students can create papers using selected AI (ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini), and faculty can view the students' use of AI as well as track their path. Faculty will be able to view which content was pasted into the Rumi assignment, as well as other insights into the student's writing process, including the percentage of copied content, writing duration, and the percentage of words revised.

Documentation/Training: Refer to the Faculty Guide to Rumi Settings for detailed instructions.

Availability: Rumi is available in all Canvas courses as an External Tool assignment type.
