Faculty_ Getting Started Guide

Understanding the abundance of resources available to you as a St. Edward’s faculty member can be confusing. To simplify things, here’s a brief guide to the technology you need to know about. Before jumping into this checklist, we recommend reviewing the Application Access for Employees support article, which offers insights into the applications accessible to faculty members.

This article covers:

Faculty Essentials

Let’s start with the tools every faculty member needs.

  • Minimum Technology Requirements: To ensure the quality and consistency of technology-enabled instruction, students and faculty at St. Edward’s University must have the proper equipment. Please ensure that your computer, webcam, microphone, and Internet access meet these standards
    • New Faculty: To check available technology options, faculty can reach out to their respective schools. If a hardware request is needed, please visit the Hardware Request support article for information on submitting a request. If you already have a school-assigned computer, submit a support request to ensure your system's proper configuration.
  • myHilltop: myHilltop is the gateway to all St. Edward’s services and systems. Access timesheets, employee information and a plethora of applications from this platform. myHilltop includes features like searching, filtering, and bookmarking your frequently used tasks for quick access. Explore the Faculty Services task center for commonly used faculty tasks. For more information, check out our myHilltop feature guide.
  • Canvas: Canvas, the university’s supported Learning Management System (LMS), is used for posting syllabi, course content, assignments, discussions, grades and student-faculty communication. You can access Canvas from myHilltop or directly at stedwards.instructure.com.
  • Email: Messages will be sent to your university Gmail account, accessible via myHilltop or gmail.stedwards.edu.
  • Google Workspace: You have access to various apps including Google Calendar and Google Drive through your St. Edward’s University Google Workspace account.
  • More Storage with Box: With Box, you have unlimited cloud file storage.
    • Wondering whether you should use Box or Google Drive? Check out our comparison chart
  • Software: University-issued computers include Microsoft Office. For specialized software requests, like Adobe Creative Cloud or SPSS for your university computer, or discounts on software like Adobe Creative Cloud and Microsoft Office for your personal computer, please contact us
  • Cybersecurity: Set up more than one authentication factor. Setting up all available factors is not required, but OIT recommends that you have at least one backup factor in case your preferred method is unavailable.
  • Stay connected with colleagues: Workplace is the central hub for employee communication.
    • Note: You can subscribe to OIT’s Tech Tips group for helpful advice on using campus technology.
  • Work efficiently from wherever you are: Enhance remote work efficiency with our advice and best practices. If you’re considering conducting a hybrid meeting (combining in-person and virtual participation), see our best practices for running a hybrid meeting to ensure all members are connected and engaged in the meeting.
