These instructions will explain how to extend testing time for individual students on Canvas.
If students need this extension due to an accommodation, they should have shared their 504 letter with you in Box. You can check their letter to determine if the student has time and a half (1.5x) or double time (2x) on exams.
This article covers:
- After creating a new quiz, set its time limit for all students. Later, add extra time for students with accommodations.
- Set the general availability of your quiz. The quiz will auto-submit when this time ends. For example, if you set a 10-minute timed quiz from 11:00 AM to 11:15 AM, students can start at 11:00, and the quiz will auto-submit after 10 minutes. Even if a student starts at 11:10, the quiz will still auto-submit at 11:15, the set closing time.
- Add "Availability" time for the student who needs extra time. The availability for your quiz needs to include your students’ extended time. You can set the availability for your entire class to include the extended time, or you can add a separate availability for your student with accommodations by clicking “+Add.”

- Click on "+Add" to add a separate set of Assign to dates for a student.
- When you click “+Add” you will see a list of your students and any sections in your class. Search for and select the student who needs extra time.
- Note: You can add multiple students here if they all need the same accommodation. Adjust the due date and availability ending date. The ending availability date needs to include the extra time granted to the student. For example, for a student who gets 1.5x for a 10-minute quiz, you would extend the ending time by 5 minutes.

Once you have added the separate student “Assign to” section, you will see the original has changed to "Everyone else."
- Note: Make sure there are at least 2 “Assign to” sections, one for “Everyone Else” and one for the student(s) needing the accommodation. If you only have one for the student(s) needing the accommodation, then the rest of the students in the class will not have access to the quiz.
- Publish the quiz. To moderate the quiz for your students with accommodations, the quiz must be published. If the Availability date is set in the future, your students will not receive a notification. Once you’ve extended the time for your student(s) with accommodations, you can unpublish the quiz and continue editing it.
- Note: You must moderate the quiz to add extra time before students start taking the quiz. You can't add extra time once they have started taking the quiz.
- Select "Moderate This Quiz" in the upper right corner. You'll see a list of your students. Select the pencil icon to the right of the student’s name to edit.
- Add extra time on every attempt and click "Save.
- Add extra time by typing in the number of extra minutes the student with accommodations should receive for the exam and click “Save.”
- For a 50-minute class period, a student with 1.5x will get 25 extra minutes.
- For a 75-minute class period, a student with 1.5x will get 38 extra minutes.
- Verify the time extension. Once you have extended the student’s time, you can verify that you have extended the time underneath the student’s name.

Note: Quiz availability dates still apply when moderating a quiz. If the Until date passes when students are taking the quiz with extended time, the quiz auto-submits even if the student’s time extension has not expired. You can edit the assignment to extend the availability date.
If you are using New Quizzes in Canvas, moderating a quiz works similarly, but it is accessed through the Build menu.
- Access the New Quiz you need to moderate and choose Build.
- Select Moderate from the Build menu.

- The Moderation page displays a list of students in the course [1], their quiz attempts [2], the score for each attempt [3], the time for each attempt [4], attempt logs [5], and total quiz accommodations [6].

-
To moderate a quiz for an individual student, click the Moderate button [8]. Moderation options include managing timer settings and reopening a student's most recent attempt.
To manage student course-wide quiz accommodations, click the student name link [9].
-
To add time or attempts for a student, click the pencil icon to open the Accommodation menu.
-
Select Additional Attempts to add attempts for the student.
-
Select Time Adjustments to Remove the Time Limit or Give Additional Time.
-
You can also choose to reduce the number of answer choices for multiple choice questions.

Canvas has extensive documentation on moderating Classic Quizzes and New Quizzes in the Canvas Guides.
If you have a student with an accommodation to take a test in the Student Disability Services (SDS) Testing Center and you require Honorlock for the quiz, you have a couple of options for setting this up. See the SDS Testing Center Guide for Faculty for detailed information about requirements.
Note: if your default settings do not include the following requirements for all students it is not necessary to make changes to the Quiz for use in the SDS Testing Center:
- Workspace Scan Photo
- Record Webcam
- Test Taker ID
- Test Taker Photo
Option 1: Request a Bypass Pin from Honorlock
If an exam is bypassed, Honorlock is disabled for that student’s attempt, and the attempt will not be proctored or monitored through Honorlock. The student will take the same exam as all other students, but the SDS staff will enter the Bypass Pin provided by you so that the student is exempted from Honorlock monitoring.
- Request a Bypass Pin by contacting Honorlock Support. Honorlock provides 24/7 support to instructors through its Support website, where they can engage in live chat with Honorlock support staff, call +1 (844) 243-2500, or email support@honorlock.com.
- Provide the Bypass Pin to SDS staff
Option 2: Create a second quiz and assign the second quiz ONLY to the student with the accommodation
Honorlock settings apply to everyone assigned the quiz. Within the Honorlock Settings there is no way to set specific settings for individuals for one quiz.
Use this option in the following cases:
- If a student has a Reader accommodation, faculty must provide confirmation that the student’s exam settings have been adjusted in order to allow the Kurzweil Read the Web Google Chrome extension.
- If you want to require some Honorlock settings to remain in place (e.g., disable copy/paste, record screen), even in the proctored setting of the SDS Testing Center.
- Note: These settings must be disabled for all students using the Testing Center:
- Workspace Scan Photo
- Record Webcam
- Test Taker ID
- Test Taker Photo
Creating a second copy of the Quiz in New Quizzes
- In your course in Canvas, click Quizzes in the course navigation menu.
- Locate the New Quizzes assessment you want to copy.
- Click the Options icon (three vertical dots) next to the quiz.
- Select Duplicate from the drop down menu.
- Important Details to Know:
- Naming: Canvas automatically appends "Copy" to the end of the new quiz's title.
- Settings & Content: The duplicate retains the original status, instructions, questions, answers, point values, and settings.
- Item Banks: The duplicated quiz shares the exact same linked Item Banks.
- Edit the Copy and change the Assign to from Everyone to the one student who needs to take the exam in the testing center.
- If needed, access Build and then Moderate to add additional time or other accommodations to the Quiz Settings.
- Save and Publish this quiz.
- Go to Honorlock in the course menu and edit the settings for this quiz copy. Remove the following settings:
- Workspace Scan Photo
- Record Webcam
- Test Taker ID
- Test Taker Photo
- If the student has a Reader accommodation, allow the Kurzweil Read the Web Google Chrome extension.
- Gradebook Settings. If the original exam was assigned to Everyone, you will need to Excuse the student taking the copied exam in the Testing center. To excuse a student from an assignment in Canvas, open the Canvas Gradebook, type EX into the student's grade cell for that assignment, and press Enter. The Excused status indicates that the student has been excused from making a submission. Students are not able to submit excused assignments, and excused assignments are not calculated in the student's total grade. You can also excuse an assignment by typing EX in the assignment cell.
For any questions about accommodations on Canvas Quizzes or Honorlock enabled Quizzes, please see the Student Disability Services Testing Center site.
