Using Panopto for Video Discussions

You can access Panopto to create videos anywhere in Canvas with an editor toolbar, including pages and discussions. With the demise of Flip (Flipgrid), using Panopto in a Canvas Discussion is one alternative for video discussions.

Faculty: Setting up a video discussion board

You can use a regular discussion in Canvas. Click on the Discussions link in your course menu. Add instructions, any specific discussion settings and a due date. Students will use the Panopto tool to record their video and embed it in a discussion reply.

Student Instructions for Using Panopto in a Discussion

  • Click on the reply button below.
  • Click on the Panopto icon in the toolbar.

Note: If you don't see this tool, you may need to expand the toolbar by clicking on the options icon (3 vertical dots) at the end of your toolbar.

  • The Panopto window will open.
  • Select My Folder from the dropdown menu. Click Record.
  • Select "Launch Capture."

Note: You may need to allow Panopto access to your microphone and camera. Click "Allow."

  • When you're ready, you can click on the red circle button to record your response.

Note: This is also where you can control audio and video.

  • When you are done, click on the red square button to stop recording.
  • You'll see a confirmation screen showing you when the video has been successfully uploaded. From this screen, you can also rerecord your video.

  • Close the Panopto tab and return to the discussion in Canvas.
  • In the Panopto pop-up, click the blue "Insert" button.
  • Click "Post Reply" in the Canvas discussion.
