Student Guide to Using Rumi

Body

Rumi is a plug-in for Canvas that can be used in writing assignments. Based on the assignment's settings and faculty policy, students may be able to use Generative AI (ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini) to complete writing assignments. Faculty can view a student's use of AI and track their writing path. Faculty will be able to see which content was pasted into the Rumi assignment, as well as other insights into the student's writing process, including the percentage of content copied, writing duration, and the percentage of words revised.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Do I have to write my entire assignment in Rumi?

Yes, Rumi is a full-featured writing environment with a toolbar similar to that in Google Docs or Microsoft Word. You should plan on typing all of your work directly into the Rumi assignment space. The instructor can see the time you spent typing the document, your edit history, copy/paste actions taken, and how you utilized the AI tools. This allows them to better understand your process and engagement.

How do I save my assignment?

Rumi automatically saves your work, so there is no need to manually press a save button. You can close and reopen the document later, and your progress will be preserved thanks to cloud saving. Just make sure to click 'Submit' when you are ready to turn in the final document.

Do I need to write the entire assignment in one sitting, or can I work on it in multiple sessions?

No, you don’t need to worry about losing work if you leave the assignment, as all work is automatically saved to the cloud. When you reopen the assignment, you can pick up where you left off.

Will my screen be recorded, or will my other browser tabs be monitored?

No, your screen will not be recorded, and your other browser tabs will not be monitored.

What will my instructor see once I submit my assignment?

How do I spell check?

The View menu has all items enabled by default. Even if your instructor is not allowing AI use for an assignment, Rumi will flag (but not correct) spelling errors.

  1. Highlight the text you’d like to spell check.

  2. Click the RumiAI button in the bottom right corner.

What data does Rumi collect?

Rumi collects only draft data, related analytics, and AI prompt usage, similar to Google Docs. However, unlike Google Docs, Rumi shares all draft, analytics and AI usage data directly with instructors. Rumi does not lock browsers, monitor other tabs, record screens, or request any additional access. AI Engines utilized by Rumi are licensed with agreements that prohibit training on student-generated content.
