Anytime proctoring of online exams is available in Canvas through Honorlock. Faculty may choose Honorlock to proctor quizzes and exams.
This article covers the following topics:
Honorlock provides on-demand proctoring services that let students take online exams at any time, without pre-scheduling. Instead of in-person proctoring, Honorlock records the screen and video of the student taking the exam. Honorlock is available 24/7, and all that is needed is:
- A private space to take the exam. Honorlock is designed for private, remote use. Campus computer labs are not set up for Honorlock because they are public and do not have webcams. Honorlock requires a webcam and will flag as potential cheating if other people are visible or heard in the room. You can install the Honorlock Chrome extension on university computers, but those computers won't have a webcam. You can bring a laptop to campus to take advantage of Internet access, but you'll need to find a private space to take the exam. If you have trouble meeting the minimum technology requirements, use the SEU Student of Concern/Conduct Form to contact the university for help.
- A photo ID
- A new-ish computer (or Chromebook). Visit Honorlock's Minimum System Requirements to verify that your equipment meets system requirements.
- A working webcam and microphone
- A stable internet connection
- Google Chrome Browser
- Honorlock Chrome Browser Extension

You can also find answers to common questions about Honorlock in the Honorlock Knowledge Base. During Honorlock-enabled assessments, a toolbar is accessible for students at the bottom of the testing window.
Honorlock offers 24/7 support directly to students through its Support website, where students can LiveChat with Honorlock support staff. During an exam, students who run into technical difficulties can access support from the Honorlock toolbar at the bottom of the testing window. Selecting the three vertical dots on the right of the toolbar will provide links to the Honorlock Knowledge Base and 24/7 Honorlock chat support. Please reach out directly to Honorlock rather than OIT for support using this tool.
After taking an online exam proctored by Honorlock, some students have reported that their next quiz in Canvas continues to trigger Honorlock proctoring even if it is not required. Honorlock recommends uninstalling the Honorlock Chrome Extension.
The university shares students' concerns about the privacy and security of their data. Our Technology Selection Process (a university-wide policy) includes steps that verify compliance with university data standards as detailed in the University Data & Records policy. These include ensuring that our student data is stored safely and not sold to third parties.
Each time a student attempts to start an assessment (exam or quiz) that was enabled with Honorlock, they will be prompted to agree to Honorlock's Terms of Service and a data collection agreement. Once they have agreed to both by checking the two checkboxes, they'll be able to proceed with their assessment as normal. These checkboxes are an important step to ensure Honorlock continues to be transparent with students on what data they are and are not collecting during their exams.
See details on the data collected and its use in the Honorlock Exam Taker Privacy Notice, which states, we process the information we collect about you via the Services on behalf of the Testing Organization that invited you to take an exam. This includes using this information to help the Testing Organization prevent cheating and other misconduct and sharing this information with the Testing Organization and as otherwise approved in our agreement with them (such as where required by law or to our third-party service providers). That is, Honorlock collects information on behalf of your instructor and the university, and the university's policies ensure your data is stored safely and not sold to third parties.
Honorlock is a Chrome extension and does not install additional software on a student's computer. Students can uninstall the Honorlock Chrome extension after their exam is over. In addition, while Honorlock does scan the Internet for academic integrity issues, it does not search a student's local network or other devices on that network.
Have more questions about student privacy and information use? Review the Honorlock Student Privacy Statement for details and answers to common questions about how Honorlock works. Students can also reach out directly to Honorlock with concerns through their Support website, where students can LiveChat with Honorlock support staff.
When using Honorlock, you will:
- Get on-screen prompts to download Chrome if you don't have it and to download the Honorlock Chrome extension.
- Launch proctoring and agree to Honorlocks Terms of Service and a data collection agreement.
- Allow the use of your camera.
- Take a picture of yourself through Honorlock.
- Provide photo ID authentication.
- Perform a 360 room scan with your computer webcam.
- Take the exam.
- You should remove the Honorlock Chrome extension after completing the exam.
Honorlock will record each exam session through your webcam and microphone and will also record the computer screen. Honorlock also has an integrity algorithm searching the open web that can detect search engine use for exam questions. During the exam, AI runs in the background and notifies Honorlock's Live Pop-In proctors of suspicious activity. Proctors can then join your session in real-time to prevent dishonesty before it happens. This certified proctor is intervening just in time to prevent suspicious activity from going further. If you accidentally prompted the Live Pop-In, the proctor will help you get back on track with the exam. Anytime the Live Pop-In proctor is activated, instructors will receive a report afterward.
After the exam, the instructor can review video recordings and the results of the proctoring session. Analytics are used to detect suspicious behaviors during an exam session. Video segments with potential exam violations are flagged for the instructor, with an overall risk level assigned to the exam session.
