Adding a Quiz to Panopto

Adding a quiz to Panopto can help check comprehension and make the experience more interactive.

You can add a quiz to Panopto that will pause the video and prompt students to take the quiz. Once students have completed the quiz, they can continue watching the video. If you choose so, you can also give them the option to retake the quiz.

This article covers the following topics:

Creating a Quiz

To create a quiz, find your Panopto recording and click the "Edit" button. The Quizzes option is available on the left side. The quiz will start for the students at the point where you place the cursor in the video timeline.

Note: Click "Apply" at the top of the page when you finish setting up the Quiz.

Checking Quiz Results

To check the quiz results, go to your video, click "Settings," and the Quiz Results option will be on the left.

Adding a Panopto Quiz as a Canvas Assignment

Creating a Panopto Quiz will not automatically add it to the Canvas Gradebook. To add Panopto Quiz's results to your Canvas Gradebook, you need to create an Assignment in Canvas and then add Panopto Recordings as an External Tool. Important reminder: Make sure you select "Panopto Recordings" and not simply "Panopto."

Important note on grading Panopto quizzes

Although Panopto records student scores in its "Quiz Results," the Panopto/Canvas integration has several issues with grade reporting. Therefore, these quizzes may be better suited for low-stakes knowledge checks or self-assessment.

  • Changes to grades are not logged in Panopto. Only the most recent score is retained by Panopto and subsequently reported to Canvas. This means a Panopto quiz assignment's grade will be updated each time the student views the video. If you want students to review the video later as part of their exam preparation, be aware that the recorded grade may change. If you add comments to their assignment, those comments and any grade adjustments will also be lost when the student views the video again. If you choose to grade Panopto quizzes, you may want to consider them as low-stakes, low-point assignments.
  • Scores are not broken down by question. In Canvas, you will only see the total score.
  • Panopto lists a 3-6 hour window for scores to be reported to the Canvas gradebook. Users have reported issues with some scores not being reported.
  • Scores are only reported to the Canvas gradebook if students access the recording from the Assignment section in Canvas. If students watch the recording and complete the quiz from the Panopto recordings tab, an embedded or linked page/module, or the Panopto app (when launched via the Canvas app), their grades will not be recorded in the gradebook.
  • If a student closes the video before taking or finishing the quiz, nothing will be reported to Canvas, and it will appear incomplete in the gradebook.
