How to Mute a Google Chat Space

To block notifications from a Google Chat Space, you can Mute the Space. When you do not want to leave a Google Chat Space or are unable to leave a Google Chat Space because it is an official university group, use this option to block notifications.

  1. On your computer, open Google Chat or Gmail.

    • In Gmail: On the left, click Chat.

  2. Next to a space name, click More options (3 dots menu)

  1. Select Mute. 

  1. When you mute a Space, the Space will appear in italics in your list of spaces and notifications will be muted. Also, conversations in the Space aren’t:

  • Highlighted in your list of conversations
  • Moved to the top of your list of conversations
  • Shown in Home

  1. To Unmute a Space, next to a space name, click More options (3 dots menu)

  1. Select Unmute.
