You can use Panopto to record content from your home or office. (In fact, it works better than recording in the classroom for captioning your recordings .)
As an overview, you'll need to do the following to record your Panopto lecture and make it available through Canvas:
- Enable Panopto in your Canvas course.
- Install the Panopto application on your computer.
- Create your recording.
- Upload the recording to Canvas.
Now, we'll explain how to do all that in the context of creating a welcome video for your course. There are directions for each of these steps here on the support website, but this is an overview:
Enabling Panopto in Your Course Menu
- Log in to Canvas and select the desired course.
- Go to Settings at the bottom of the left navigation menu.
- In the Settings area, click the Navigation tab.
- Drag Panopto Recordings into the upper portion of the menu to enable it. This will add it to the Course Navigation menu.
- Click Save at the bottom of the page.
Installing the Panopto Recorder Application
- Click Panopto Recordings in the left navigation menu.
- On the Panopto Recordings page, click the Create button.
- Next, select Record a new session.
- If you don't have Panopto already installed on your machine, you'll click the appropriate download button for your computer type and follow the installation instructions.
- When Panopto is installed, it may open automatically. If not, go back to the Panopto section in Canvas and click the blue Create button.
Using the Panopto Recorder to Create Your Video
- This time, click Record a new session and select Launch Panopto.
- Now that you have the Panopto Recorder application open, you're ready to record your video. You'll need to make sure your audio and video sources are correct. You'll see yourself on the camera display and see the audio meter moving when you've selected the correct audio and video sources. You select these sources using the dropdown arrows next to the video and audio devices. Additionally, make sure you're recording to the correct course folder. If you'd like to record to a different folder, click the folder icon to select a different course. By default, the name of the session is the date and time of the recording. You should change this to add a specific session name.
- When you're ready to record, press the red record button. When you've finished recording, press the stop button.
- Once the recording is complete, you'll select the upload button to send the recording to the server. Depending on the length of the video, it may take a few minutes to upload. Don't close Panopto or shut down the computer during this time. After it's been uploaded and processed, the video will become automatically viewable in Canvas.
